If you are interested in reading about hiking, I recommend an “oldie but goodie” book titled A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryon. If you are interested in experiencing a nearby walk, I recommend exploring Florida Gulf Coast University. Yes, FGCU dedicates half of its 800-acre campus to protected nature preserves and restored conservation areas. It is the student’s living laboratory to study ecosystems that we all can enjoy. Look for the signs off the roads and near the dormitories that lead to the paths for walking. There are miles of boardwalks and unpaved trails that are open for hiking, running and wildlife walking. The University manages this protective space as a preserve to remove any invasive species that try to take over the natural habitat. The paths create a limited view of the preserve to help protect the environment.
My suggestion is to park near the shops on the Florida Gulf Coast Property and proceed on the path to South Village where you can pick up another path. There is an easy-to-walk walkway and if you are so inclined you may drop down onto the nature walk; note that the outdoor classroom may be difficult to walk due to the wetland. You really do need waterproof boots if you stay on the path.
The aerial view will give a good idea of the paths that you may enjoy trying. The nature trail walk passes through the uplands which is several inches higher than the rest of the land. It is interesting to note that the sabal palms and other palms are fire resistant due to the close layers of their bark. Also, you will see oak trees in the lower area that provide a canopy of shade for the ferns to grow. As shown here, the paths have helpful markings on the trees to define which path you are on according to colors.

After your leisurely walk back to your car, I highly suggest visiting one of the many nearby restaurants to enjoy the added calories that you so deserve.
